In simultaneous interpreting, an interpreting system (a soundproof booth at conferences, or portable equipment, i.e. a compact mobile interpreting system with headphones) is used to interpret the speaker simultaneously while they talk. Due to the extremely high levels of concentration required (in a study in 2007, the World Health Organisation ranked the occupation of simultaneous interpreting as the third most stressful job in the world behind that of pilots and air traffic controllers), simultaneous interpreters always work in pairs and alternate after sessions of around half an hour.

In the case of consecutive interpreting – unlike simultaneous interpreting – no technical equipment is used. A lecture or talk, or what people say in a meeting, is interpreted when the speaker makes a pause. The sequences of speaking and interpreting can cover just a few words or sentences, or passages of up to 15 minutes duration. While the person is talking, the interpreter may make notes which are then used as the basis for an interpretation which is as comprehensive and complete as possible.
